Sometimes when I pick up Pumpkin Pie at preschool, I bring Doodle Dog along just to air him out and give Pumpkin Pie a little treat. Pumpkin Pie likes the enthusiastic puppy greeting in the van. In a freak coincidence I had the van vacuumed recently and it was raining, so the dog stayed home.
As it turns out, Pumpkin Pie had a rough day today at preschool. I didn’t get specifics from his teachers. When I asked, I got the sideways hand wiggle with outstretched fingers, mensa-mensa style. All they said was, “all the kids need to get outside”. It has been raining for several days in a row for the first time since before those kids were born. I got Pumpkin Pie in the hallway and his lip was quivering and he told me that the director told them they might have to go back to the three year-old class and he did not WANT to go back to the three year-old class. (Stop thinking that right this minute! She is a lovely person and a wonderful teacher/director, and who knows WHAT she actually said).
After some hugs, Pumpkin Pie made it to the car with a just a couple more tears and climbed in.
Pumpkin Pie: Mom, how come you didn’t bring Doodle Dog with you in the car today?
Me: I didn’t want to get fur in the car, it’s sorta clean.
Pumpkin Pie: Oh. (Lip beginning to quiver again) Because Doodle Dog makes the car ride better.
It’s not easy being 4.
