If you know anything about Pickles, know that he does not like change. He is like Henry in the Oswald kids’ show. Henry (who is voiced by Squiggy, which is extremely awesome) goes to the corner restaurant and every time he orders “Fish sticks. Just. like. always.” That is my sweet Pickles. For lunch at school, Pickles takes a peanut butter and honey sandwich every day. Just. like. always. He even eats them on the weekends. Pickles wears jeans every day (he wears shorts when it’s hot outside, he’s quirky, not pathological). Just. like. always. When we have tacos, he insists we also have pickles (hence the name). He has been wearing black Adidas Samba indoor soccer shoes for several years now. He grew out of the first pair and didn’t want anything else, so I got him another, and another when he grew out of those, and another. He wears them every day. Just. like. always.
Pickles’ current Sambas were starting to wear out recently, so we went to get him a new pair. But, Pickles decided he wanted the white pair with the black stripes instead of the black pair with the white stripes this time. I know, he is really branching out! They didn’t have them, so Pickles left the store empty-handed (or empty footed, as it were) after deciding to wait until they got the white ones in. They were also $15 more expensive, which is ridiculous. Now, don’t tell Pickles, but Husband ordered him the exact pair he wants Christmas.
Last week, Pickles wore a hole in the sole of his most recent pair of Sambas riding down the driveway on a big wheel at Camp Mamaw. I wasn’t ready to give up the new Christmas shoes, and I thought it would be best for Pickles to have a pair of
drag down the driveway behind the big wheel, thrash through the woods, wear on dog poop patrol play shoes to compliment his new, overpriced, white Sambas. So, the trick was getting Pickles to agree to get a new pair of shoes that were NOT Sambas
It actually wasn’t as difficult as I would have thought. He wanted shoes that didn’t let the cold, wet dirt in on his feet, so he was on board immediately. Go figure. Pickles picked out some cute, inexpensive skater-type sneaks at Target and we were done in 10 minutes. He loves them. I think he was genuinely surprised that he would be happy with anything on his feet other than his usual. Pickles wore the new shoes out to play on Sunday and when he came home, he told me this:
Pickles: Mom, I really love my new shoes.
Me: Good I am happy for you!
Pickles: I feel like a different person.
Pickles: Yeah. Like I am having different thoughts and everything!
Me: Uh… Seriously? (Wondering if I am going to have to call a foot doctor or something)
Pickles (laughing): Yeah. I know it’s weird, but it’s awesome! I never knew new shoes could make such a difference. (Then he heads back outside to play)
Go get ’em, Pickles. Get your mojo wherever you can. Of course we are still out the $$ for the overpriced Sambas, but well worth it.
BTW, if you are into it, you can order patterns on Etsy to crochet the entire Oswald crew here. I tried to find a clip of Henry ordering his fish sticks, but that ended up with Pumpkin Pie in front of the computer watching full Oswald episodes. Fail. If anyone finds it, pls let me know. It makes me laugh. Just. like. always.
